Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club marked another milestone in its history with its successful acquisition of the licensing rights as Southeast Asia’s first golf facility to join the PGA TOUR’s prestigious TPC Network.
The newly-named TPC Kuala Lumpur was officiated by Her Majesty the Queen of Malaysia Tuanku Hajah Haminah and joins the highly acclaimed network of golf courses affiliated with the PGA TOUR, most of which are based in the US. As home of the CIMB Classic, TPC Kuala Lumpur will also hold the distinction of being Southeast Asia’s first TPC-branded facility to ever host an official PGA TOUR event.
“The agreement with the PGA TOUR is a recognition of TPC Kuala Lumpur’s tournament-grade golf courses, world-class facilities and services as well as commitment to excellence,” Sime Darby Property managing director Dato' Ir Jauhari Hamidi said. “With this new relationship, we aspire to elevate TPC Kuala Lumpur’s status further as the number one golf club in Southeast Asia. These include the areas of operations, club management, human capital development, food and beverage as well as leisure management services. Beyond these, we also aim to position TPC Kuala Lumpur as the paradise for golfing and leisure, a catalyst to boost tourism in Malaysia,” Jauhari said.
“We are delighted to have our newest licensed TPC located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia,” PGA TOUR deputy commissioner Jay Monahan said. “TPC Kuala Lumpur is an excellent facility with world-class amenities and has distinguished itself as an outstanding host site for the CIMB Classic. We are also excited that TPC Kuala Lumpur potentially can serve as a catalyst for more TPCs to emerge in Asia with the rapidly growing number of Asian golfers.”
In addition to the CIMB Classic, TPC Kuala Lumpur also successfully hosted the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia and the European Tour’s Malaysian Open between 2013 and 2015. Members of TPC Kuala Lumpur enjoy additional access to 34 clubs including the renowned TPC Sawgrass, TPC Scottsdale and TPC Harding Park.
“Our team has done a fantastic job of developing the club over the years,” TPC Kuala Lumpur CEO Steven Thielke said. “We’ve had phenomenal success staging some of the best international golf tournaments. Our aim now is to embrace this global recognition through the TPC brand and continuously strive to be the best that any golf club could ever be.”
