Ponte Vedra Inn & Club pouring $8 million into course renovation

Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in northeast Florida announced plans this week to fully renovate its 18-hole championship Ocean Course, beginning in August and slated for completion by summer 2020.

The renovation will address all aspects of the course, including greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage, grassing, bridges and bulkhead, and landscaping, along with substantial improvements to the course’s driving range and practice facilities.

Debuting in 1928, the Ocean Course has been a cornerstone amenity at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club for more than 90 years. First designed by Herbert Strong, the Inn’s signature course has undergone two major renovations since its opening, first in 1940 and later in 1998. Bobby Weed, who also led the 1998 Ocean Course renovation, will be returning to lead the project once more.

 “This renovation will mark an exciting new era in the Ocean Course’s long and storied history,” Ponte Vedra Inn & Club director of golf Jim Howard said. “We are incredibly excited to see the improvements and are confident that guests and members of the club will be delighted by the results.”

The renovation is part of a larger $40 million commitment to upgrade and modernize the resort as it approaches its centennial anniversary. Over the last 18 months, enhancements have been made to several of the resort’s amenities, including renovations to the golf club dining room and pro shop, expansion of the club’s locker rooms and a remodeling of the resort’s family pool.

Guests and members will continue to have access to the resort’s 18-hole Lagoon Course, a 6,022-yard, par-70 design by Robert Trent Jones and Joe Lee. Restored and enhanced in 2007 by Weed, the Lagoon Course’s narrow fairways and fast greens serve as an integral piece of Ponte Vedra Inn & Club’s championship golf experience.
