Architects Trey Kemp and John Colligan have been selected to guide the renovation at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, Texas. Originally designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge, the course at Crown Colony is 46 years old.

“The course has been kept in great shape over the years, but the greens have gotten smaller, the bunkers have lost their original shapes, and the time has come for many of the components to be updated,” Kemp said.

The project will address bridges, tree trimming, tee surfaces, bunkers, drainage and greens. Plans were completed in early March and construction started April 1. Sanders Golf Course Construction will work alongside Kemp and Colligan to renovate the greens and bunkers throughout the course. Once work is completed, superintendent Clayton Creel and team will prepare the course to reopen for play in October.

"The renovation will address aesthetics, playability and maintenance elements of the course in an effort to take it back to its original grandeur,” Colligan said. “Trey and I are very honored to have this opportunity to restore such a great piece of Texas golf history.”

Colligan is an ASGCA member and owner of Colligan Golf Design, a firm celebrating its 27th year in business. Kemp is also an ASGCA member and started his own company Kemp Golf Course Design in 2022. The duo has executed numerous Texas projects together, including Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, Stevens Park Golf Course in Dallas and Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington.
