A PGA Championship in May become a real thing Monday as the world’s best players converged at Bethpage State Park for rain-shortened practice rounds. By all accounts, the Black Course handled the winter nicely, allowing director of agronomy Andy Wilson and his 60-member crew, which maintains five municipal courses, to provide pleasing playing surface for the event. A team of 100 volunteers are assisting the Bethpage crew during PGA Championship week.
Golf Course Industry editor Guy Cipriano walked the course before a Monday afternoon downpour to admire the work of Wilson’s team. The walk turned into a pleasant hike in a state park preparing to host a third major championship on its signature course. Bethpage Black previously hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens.
