Al Zorah Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates announced it has committed to plant a mangrove tree for every round of golf played during April.
Over the course of the month, an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 trees are expected to be planted across the 11th hole, which recently underwent a major restoration project as a part of the club’s ongoing environmental efforts. The plot was previously covered with overgrown vegetation, but after a month of hard work by the agronomy team, the club has successfully rejuvenated the area to create a prosperous environment for the mangroves to thrive.
The mangrove trees are all being provided by Al Zorah’s Quest for Adventure nursery. Club members, guests, residents and associates will have the opportunity to each plant a mangrove tree throughout the month in a collaborative effort to support the initiative.
"It's fantastic to see Al Zorah Golf Club taking a proactive approach to environmental conservation through their mangrove planting initiative,” Troon International director of construction and agronomy Clinton Southorn said. “I am proud to see one of our clubs leading the charge in sustainability efforts. This initiative is not only beneficial to the environment, but also serves as an inspiration to the golf industry as a whole. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of their efforts for years to come."
The club's dedication to sustainability was recognized when it achieved GEO Certification in November 2022.
"Preserving the local ecosystem has always been a top priority for us, and we are thrilled to have successfully restored this area to create a new home for even more mangroves and subsequent wildlife,” Al Zorah Golf Club general manager Philip Henderson said. “It's exciting to offer our golfers the opportunity to play a round of golf while also supporting our commitment to the environment. We look forward to seeing how many of our guests will take up this chance and play a part in sustainable initiatives."
