Safari insecticide available for use on HWA

Safari 20 SG Insecticide has received a Special Local Need (SLN) label in New York for use against the highly devastating, invasive pest: the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). 
 
Under the SLN label, Safari may be applied outdoors as a low-pressure basal trunk spray on federal, state, public and private landholdings in New York. It can be applied to both Eastern and Carolina hemlock trees for control of HWA and elongate hemlock scale.

“We just got HWA in the Finger Lakes region of New York, and it’s already gotten into some of the most scenically important and genetically important hemlock forests we have in New York. We were concerned we would be unable to protect these resources and so we applied for the Safari SLN. We just received approval and we have treatments put in place for the fall, and it’s none too soon. Imidacloprid has been the industry standard and it is a fantastic tool, but it is not as effective as Safari in older trees. Having access to Safari is crucial for us because it gets into the tree quickly and knocks down HWA, and then you can apply imidacloprid for longer-term treatments. Safari is an essential part of the effective treatment of old-generation trees, especially if you discover the infestation when HWA populations are already high.” – Mark C. Safari Insecticide is a new generation, super-systemic neonicotinoid with quick uptake and knockdown of HWA and a broad spectrum of other major landscape and ornamental pests. In addition to HWA, Safari also controls elongate hemlock scale, another common pest to hemlock trees.
  
Under the SLN label, Safari should be applied as a basal trunk spray at a rate of 9.0 oz per gallon of water. When applied just to the point of runoff, one gallon of spray solution will treat approximately 65-85 inches of cumulative trunk diameter.
