Epic balance
Michael Coleman’s article in the April issue of GCI (“Epic Battle: Hourly vs. Salary”) hit close to home, being an hourly employee at a high-end private golf club, where the list of things to do is seemingly always growing.
My overtime hours are restricted at present, so I’ve found a balance between my work and personal life, but I always take whatever extra is thrown my way, versus sitting at home when I’m mentally at work 24/7 anyways. Sometimes my boss and I kid that I should be on salary, so I don’t feel guilty that he’s still there, working hard when I’m gone for the day. Keep up the great work!

In good company
I’ve been a big fan of Pat Jones’ writing for quite some time now. I always look forward to receiving my issue of Golf Course Industry and the first thing I do is open the back cover and read Pat’s article. It reminds me of many moons ago when I lived in the “leafy glades” of Clarendon Hills, Ill. My favorite thing was to grab my Chicago Tribune and head down to our little town diner, get the big country breakfast, drink 12 or 13 cups of coffee and read the morning newspaper cover to cover. I would always, without exception, go straight to Mike Royko’s column. I always appreciated his candor and honesty. I didn’t always agree with him, but that’s the beauty of journalism. Pat is right there with Mr. Royko. His candor and honesty stimulates people to “think” about the issue at hand and look at it in perhaps a very different way – priceless! Thank you!
